President’s Update
This should be a very exciting year for MYAA. All of our sports commissioners have been working very hard over the winter months to improve upon very successful 2007 sports seasons. As you may be aware, our Board of Directors meets each month to make sure that we are on track and that every potential challenge becomes an opportunity and is addressed. I am extremely proud how everyone works together to provide the best youth sports program in New Jersey.
We have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the Township of Medford, by far the strongest relationship that I have seen since joining the MYAA organization. Everyone fully understands our short term and long term goals and objectives. Among other things, we have worked together to make sure that the artificial turf field at The Bende Sports Complex is being shared with several organizations within Medford Township.
Because of our excellent team, I am going to focus my time this year on developing a program for special needs children who can not participate in our mainstream youth sports programs. I welcome the knowledge and help of anyone who has experience in this type of program. The main focus is that every child is a winner at MYAA.
I would like to offer a two day event focusing on t-ball, touch football and soccer. I would like to shadow our junior athletes with our older MYAA athletes. Every athlete would receive a team uniform and we would have an awards ceremony at the end of our event.
We continue to receive requests for girl’s field hockey and lacrosse programs. Although I am disappointed that we currently do not provide these programs, we can offer them if we find the right volunteer (sports commissioner) to run the programs. If anyone has an interest or if you know of someone with the right background, please feel free to contact any MYAA board member.
I am truly grateful for the many hours that our volunteers put into our program. We have over 700 adults who devote their time to making our sports program what they are. I have been involved with many sports programs over the years and this by far the most dedicated group of individuals I have encountered, spending many hours away from their families taking care of each of our children.
As always, if you have any ideas on how we can improve our program or if you would like to get involved, please feel free to contact me. In addition, we set aside the beginning segment of our Board meetings for members of the public. Feel free to come and let us know what you think. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 PM at Ott’s Tavern on Stokes Road.

Medford Football
The 2008 registration period for Medford Football is May 3rd and May 10th in person at Chairville school only - there will be no on-line registration for football.
Medford Football is open to children from Medford Township and Medford Lakes only, ages 6 to 14 (born from October of 1993 through September of 2002). Children attending High School are not eligible.
The MYAA Football program is a developmental but competitive, traveling program. There is a very competitive Varsity component where winning is very important and players compete for position and playing time. There is also a comprehensive Junior Varsity component more focused on development and less focused on winning. BOTH components require a very significant commitment on behalf of both players and parents. Attendance at all practices and games is very, very important. Practices for all players start in early August, and the players practice 5 nights per week until school starts, and three nights per week thereafter. Both the Varsity and the Junior Varsity components require fairly extensive travel to away games. The “Regular Season” begins in early September. We play 8 “regular Season” Varsity games, one per week, and 8 to 10 Junior Varsity games during the same period. That is followed by Varsity playoffs and a Junior Varsity tournament in early November.
Players are assigned, according to very strict League guidelines, to one of 5 teams based on both age and weight:
70 pound team – player must be under 70 pounds, and must be/have been 7 years old, or younger, on 10/1/00, but 6 years old, or older, on September 1, 2002 (birth date must be AFTER 9/30/00, but BEFORE 10/1/2002).
85 pound team – player must be under 85 pounds, and must be/have been 9 years old, or younger, on 10/1/98 (birth date must be AFTER 9/30/98).
105 pound team – player must be under 105 pounds, and must be/have been 11 years old, or younger, on 10/1/96 (birth date must be AFTER 9/30/96).
120 pound team – player must be under 120 pounds, and must be/have been 13 years old, or younger, on 10/1/94 birth date must be AFTER 9/30/94).
Unlimited team – there is no weight limit for this team, however the player must be/have been 14 years old, or younger, on 10/1/93 (birth date must be AFTER 9/30/93).
The Medford Indians are a member of the South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League, and play teams from Marlton, Voorhees, Lindenwold, Interboro, Washington Township, Monroe, Camden, Deptford, Pennsauken, Paulsboro, Glassboro, Gloucester Township, and Winslow.
This is a competitive league, and there are standings, playoff games, and championships. Due to the competitive nature of the league, there are no playing time rules, particularly at the Varsity level. Playing time is totally at the discretion of the coach, and some players may not play at all in Varsity games. The Junior Varsity program is more flexible. There are still no guarantees of playing time, however coaches try very, very hard to be fair and considerate.
The South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League has very strict rules regarding eligibility in terms of weight and age, as noted above. All players must present an original birth certificate (not a photocopy) for inspection by league officials at the beginning of the season. All players are weighed at a league wide weigh-in before the season begins, and no player exceeding the allowed weight for a specific team will be allowed to play on that team. In most cases, these players move up to the next weight level for which they qualify.
As mentioned, there are 8 scheduled regular season Varsity games, scheduled by the league. These games are usually played on Friday evenings and weekends. Game times are set at the discretion of the home team, but within guidelines set by the league. The Medford Indians play their home games at the football field at Hartford Crossing Park on Church Road, across from Lenape High School. Normally, all five teams from Medford play all five teams from another league organization on a given weekend. Normally, if Medford is the home team, the 85 pound team will play at 7:00 PM on Friday evening, followed by the 105 pound team. Normally, the 70 pound team will play at 4:00 PM on Saturday evening, followed by the 120 pound team, followed by the Unlimited team. Away games are generally played on Friday evenings and weekends as well, but the times vary at the discretion of the opposing team. The varsity schedule normally begins the second week in September, runs for 8 weeks, and is followed by playoffs for qualifying teams.
Practices are held for all teams at football complex at Hartford Crossing Park. Practice schedules are at the discretion of each team coach, but generally are from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on weeknights. Generally, teams practice Monday through Friday, until school starts, then cut back to 3 nights per week. Those three nights are at the discretion of each team coach.
The head coaches for the 2008 season are as follows:
85 Poundd Team – Dave Smith – 609 714 0536
105 Pound Team – Dennis Boyle – 856 983 8028
120 Pound Team – Rob Garner – 609 654 7669
Unlimited Team - Dennis Morrone – 609 654 9640
The commissioner of the MYAA football program is Frank Shelley – 609 654 4419 / f.shelley@verizon.net.
